Intent
- Ensure all children enjoy and are engaged with high quality Physical Education & Sport.
- Provide opportunities to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills.
- Enhance and support life-long fitness and healthier lifestyle choices.
- Develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding to increase confidence and competence.
- Challenge and promote self-esteem and create a positive mindset.
- Encourage resilience to persevere with difficult situations or activities.
- Teach cooperation and collaboration with others to work as part of a team.
- Experience a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognized.
- Support children to enable them to gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation.
- Enable links to be formed with local community clubs.
- KS2 children to are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over 25m.
Implementation
- Taught by class teachers & PE specialists.
- Participate in 2 high quality PE and sporting activities each week covering 2 sporting disciplines each half term.
- PE programme incorporates a variety of sports, skills and games
- Progression is built into the programme which ensures children are challenged as they move through the school.
- EYFS has a strong focus on fundamental movement skills, negotiating space safely within and around others and learning how to handle and use different equipment.
- KS1 develops fundamental skills further and ball skills and the understanding of defence and attack, using simple tactics, control and flexibility.
- KS2 develops the above skills further and are applied to specific sports within each half term.
- The teaching of dance and gym develops flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
- Extra – curricular activities are available for children to engage in during, before and after school.
- Children in from Year 3 upwards attend swimming lessons at the local swimming pool at least once a year, where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes.
- Children partake in competitions and development sporting events, encouraging physical development and well-being for pupils.
- Long term provision map sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year, ensuring all requirements of the national curriculum are met.
- Identified children who may struggle in PE lessons, engage in our gross motor intervention called Cool Club once a week run by our Sports Coach.
Impact
- Assessment – In all classes, assessment for Learning (AfL) is ongoing and informs future planning. At the end of each topic, teachers/sports coach assess pupils against the standard indicators. This informs end of term assessment.
- A high number of children achieve the expected standard or higher, and through targeted intervention, those who find P.E challenging are helped to catch up.
- Improve wellbeing and fitness of all children identified through pupil voice.
- Provide opportunities to acquire and practice skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone in small groups and in teams to apply skills in chosen activities to achieve high levels of performance.
- Children learn to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness.
- Equip children with the necessary skills to develop a love of sport.
- Motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way.
