Growing Together in Faith, Love and Learning

Computing

“In Jerusalem his inventors made equipment for shooting arrows and for throwing large stones from the towers and corners of the city wall. His fame spread everywhere, and he became very powerful because of the help he received from God.”  (2 Chronicles 26:15)

Intent

  • Develop ‘thinkers of the future’ through a relevant Computing education.
  • Children to understand the advantages and disadvantages of online experiences by teaching them to be respectful, responsible and how to be safe whilst online.
  • Children to understand how to use technology confidently as tools for learning, to express themselves and to drive their generation into the future.
  • Provide a balanced computing curriculum with opportunities to apply skills in various digital contexts.
  • Children have the opportunities to develop what they have learnt in Computing lessons in the wider curriculum.

implementation

  • At St Bernadette’s our EYFS children are taught the basic skills needed when using technology to allow them to have the foundations in preparation for KS1.
  • At St Bernadette’s we ensure our children are taught Computing from Nursery to Year 6.
  • Our Computing curriculum is based on the NCCE’s Teach Computing curriculum and covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Our aim is that our children are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the digital world of today and the future.
  • Our children are explicitly taught the three strands of Computing; Computer Science, Digital Literacy and Information Technology.
  • We ensure that the safety of our children is at the forefront of our Computing lessons. We will model and educate children on how to stay safe online. We teach an online safety lesson at the start of each half termly unit, it is also woven throughout lessons, both in Computing lessons and in the wider curriculum.
  • We will provide opportunities for children to embed their Computing skills by using them in other subjects during cross-curricular activities.
  • At St Bernadette’s we ensure that Computing is inclusive and accessible for all children, by taking an adaptive teaching approach, working with TA/teacher support in small groups or 1:1 where necessary or using other resources to support learning.
  • Our Computing Subject Leader ensures Computing lessons are planned, taught and evaluated well, by conducting monitoring throughout the academic year, via pupil/staff voice, lesson observations and work scrutiny.

Impact

  • Assessments take place throughout the academic year via formative assessment from the class teacher stating whether our children are working towards, at or exceeding age-related expectations.
  • Our children feel excited about exploring new programmes and technology.
  • Our children are safe when online.
  • Our children are aware of online safety issues and protocols, to ensure they respond in a respectful and responsible manner.
  • Children at St Bernadette’s understand the importance of technology today and in the future and are able to make appropriate digital choices.
  • Our children are able to use technology with confidence and can save, access and showcase their work.
